Description: It was made with Whippet Up’s community groups in the south tees area. It is made from recycled materials including, water pipe, pipe lagging, old scaffolding net, rags from old duvets, fabric scraps and anything else we could find
Is there is a folktale connected to your Giant or Beast? We wanted to create a beast that anyone could be part of and would be inspired by tier flying kites and Chinese dragons but because Whippet Up are known for participatory activities and reusing anything they can lay their hands on the Rag Dragon came into being.
What was the first event the Giant/Beast attended?
Redcar’s kite festival
Any tales of outings/visits/strange and wonderful occurrences or special memories that should go down in History
Whenever it appears, children and adults want to be part of it. they all love wearing the hat and the cape and going on a mission. It has performed infront of the Lord lieutenant with people who had never been in it before and had no idea what they were doing.
Who Carries the Giant / Inhabits the Beast, or Is It a Shared Role? It is carried by myslf, Andrew, and escorted by my teaser Captain Herring Josette and with Golan the teaser stick
How is it stored? In an old farm building What can you tell us about how it is carried and by who? We usually have a volunteer for the head (very popular) and we recruit wherever we are. The rag dragon can take 12 people ( there are 12 hoops) but often people will double up to be part of the experience and has been known to fly with 20.
