Description: Alargh Du is a tall mast horse, also known as a guise beast or a Cornish Oss. The build is centred around an ethically sourced horse skull which has been stained with alder cones. The main part of the build is fixed into the jaw which allows an oak pole to be attached, which in turn is slotted into a modified weight lifters belt. The top part of the skull is fitted with a simple mechanism that allows it to snap. The fabric body is panelled and attached at various points to different parts of the skull, whilst its entirety is covered in fabric strips or tatters that are sewn on. Ribbons and a decorative garland adorn the skull, with lighting weaved around the garland. The construction in general is very sturdy which allows for heavy usage and durability in winter weather and dancing amongst large crowds.
Is there is a folktale connected to your Giant or Beast? Alargh Du is Cornish for black swan and his creation is inspired by a magical encounter with three visiting black swans over a period of several weeks some years ago.
What was the first event the Giant/Beast attended?
Alargh first appeared at Penzance’s winter solstice festival Montol in 2024.
Any tales of outings/visits/strange and wonderful occurrences or special memories that should go down in History
His first outing was spectacularly chaotic, which at its peak consisted of being surrounded by teenagers wanting selfies in an absolute mud bath of a park, whilst a fire engine was on scene dealing with a bonfire which had been used to burn an effigy of the sun. We’ve learnt a lot since that first appearance…
Who Carries the Giant / Inhabits the Beast, or Is It a Shared Role? Alargh has only one handler and is guided by two different dancers (teazers) who lead him through the streets.
How is it stored? He spends his down time on a modified speaker stand in our living room.
