Description Tregeagle is the Giant of Helston: a backpack giant standing over 3 metres tall. He is built on an aluminium frame, including a repurposed zimmer frame, with a hooped cane structure crafted from canes sourced from a traditional crab pot maker and fisherman in Mevagissey. His head is made from basketry and papier-mâché, and he is dressed in the finest of reclaimed textiles from Scrapstore Cornwall, with netting woven into his costume to hold foliage generously donated by Kehelland Trust and Falmouth Town Council Grounds Team.
He bears an all-seeing third eye made from a limpet shell and was created and summoned by the Lost Giants with the help of the good people of Helston.
Is there a folktale connected to your Giant or Beast? Yes. Tregeagle is inspired by the Cornish legend of Jan Tregeagle, the notorious giant whose cruel deeds condemned him to wander the land performing impossible tasks. One of the best-known tales places him at Loe Bar, where he is doomed to empty the waters of Loe Pool using nothing but a limpet shell with a hole in it.
For our playful reimagining, Tregeagle becomes a guardian of nature rather than a cursed soul. Realising the importance of the unique freshwater habitat at Loe Pool, he redeems himself by replacing his solid limpet shell with one that has a hole, allowing the waters to remain in balance and protecting the landscape and the wildlife that depends on it.
What Was the First Event the Giant / Beast Attended? Wake the Giant – a special giant making / summoning ceremony at Coronation Park, Helston. Part of the Playful Park events organised by South Kerrier Alliance CIC.
Who Carries the Giant / Inhabits the Beast, or Is It a Shared Role? Tregeagle is carried by strong man and giant porter extraordinaire Benedict Webb
How is it stored? Tregeagle is built in a modular way. After each appearance, he is carefully dismantled: his foliage is removed, his body undressed, limbs detached, and head separated before being packed into a compact studio resting place alongside many other Lost Giants, awaiting his rebirth.
His cane and aluminium framework was designed to be reused, allowing his internal structure to be reshaped into a completely new giant. Tregeagle’s “innards” are intended to shapeshift into another giant in the future.
