Today marked the beginning of our giantmaking project with Leedstown School, as part of #ArtsLab.
We were delighted to have Stephen Polglase with us, who shared his tale “The Last Giants” featuring Giants Wotholga and Tregonna from the nearby Godolphin and Tregonning Hill. Safe to say students in years 4, 5, and 6 enjoyed the tale as much as us.
Following the storytelling, the students had the opportunity to meet the Giant Wotholga up close, having a good look at how he was built, and gaining insights into our giant-making techniques and trade secrets!
After that we got straight to work, thinking about what the Giant Tregona looked like. With a game of Exquisite Corpse, the students brought their giant ideas to life on paper.
We then focused on the all important structure, working in teams and thinking about how to make a giant that is both lightweight and sturdy.
We were so impressed by the creativity, imagination, and inquisitiveness displayed by the students of Leedstown School. Their enthusiasm left us feeling really inspired for our next workshop, where, based on today’s outcomes, we will start bringing Tregona the giant to life.

by Amy Webb, The Lost Giants Mal is a lemon slug. And like many—if not all—slugs, Mal doesn’t have a voice. But like so many ancient woodland indicator species, Mal carries a deep, instinctive yearning to exist. A right to simply be and a right to be heard. Over the past few months, as Mal has grown, I’ve come …
